*30 hours represent the amount of time necessary to cover objectives at each step. The amount of time necessary for a person of average aptitude to assimilate, acquire and re-utilize language may vary from one learner to the next. It depends on factors such as exposure to the language, motivation, commitment and availability.
STEP ONE (30 hours)
General objective
Participants will be able to introduce themselves and others, ask about someone else’s identity, and give work-related information. They will give and ask for information about where people, places and things are located, etc.

General objective

SLE PREPARATION COURSE (30 hours)
General objective
We understand that for many participants, having to pass SLE tests is a stressful event. Our theory and preparation course allows them to tackle those tests with more calm and confidence by familiarizing them with many aspects of the test.
The SLE preparation course is an accelerated training program designed to perfect participants’ capability before taking the PSC tests. It is a key element in helping them successfully achieve their linguistic objectives in French.
The oral test preparation includes a presentation on how the test is customarily administered, along with an overview of some useful communication strategies and practical exercises on second-language comprehension, expression and interaction.
Reading comprehension
Training will be carried out, using the PSC exercise books in order to identify any reading comprehension aspects that require further consolidation, therefore helping the participant to develop specific communication competencies. Concepts will be reviewed within specific and concrete contexts to encourage practical use of French.

Written expression
Training will be carried out, using the PSC exercise books in order to identify specifically all grammar concepts that require further consolidation, therefore helping the participant to develop specific communication competencies.
This will involve simple and complex sentence construction and use of pronouns, articles, prepositions, adverbs and gender within a specific and contextual participant to teacher interaction. Concepts will be reviewed within specific and concrete contexts to encourage practical use of French. Grammar manuals shall be used only as reference not as permanent study tools. This reflects our teaching strategy, emphasizing practice so as to build the confidence of the participant.

Oral test
Training in this area will meet the participant’s individual needs in Oral. Sessions will be directed toward a systemic consolidation of vocabulary and of syntax through Oral test simulations using the following schemes:
- Mastery of verb tense conjugation (to learn to pick the right verb tense within speech context)
- Emphasis on oral comprehension (to acquire specific vocabulary and French rhythm through CD conversations listening and discourse analysis)
- Direct structure acquisition (to develop the ability to move from on structure to another such as the interrogative versus the affirmative form or the direct speech versus the reported speech)
Lessons in this area will help in developing further the participant’s knowledge and understanding of a specific professional environment in order to be able to speak comfortably about it with people outside that domain of expertise. Training sessions will be conducted on issues related to the participant’s work environment. Discussions are aimed at bringing confidence and good command of French to the participant through the following topics:
- Policy analysis
- Public service/ responsibility and accountability
- Human resources
- Workplace/ interpersonal relations
- Federal government organizational structure
Lessons will also include vocabulary improvement associated with some related subject areas, such as Internet and new technologies, new global challenges, Canadian demographics and social trends, philosophy and social policies, etc. The following will constitute the specific learning objectives of this area:
- Thorough knowledge of the functional content of a professional discourse
- Thorough understanding of the PSC performance criteria
- Good understanding of the linguistic functions usually evaluated during an oral exam
The training content will seek to increase the participant’s understanding of all issues related to the Federal government and the public service. The participant will be submitted to elaborate interviews on work-related topics as well as news review, etc. The following will constitute the specific learning objectives of this area:
- The participant will develop the ability to communicate goals, causes and consequences of work related issues including: objectives, policies, procedures, programs, work related issues and organizational structure
- The participant will be able to compare and contrast policies, programs, positions, etc.
- The participant will be able to confidently discuss work related problems and procedures
- The participant will develop language skills to accurately recount events in the past, present and future within an evaluation context
- The participant will be able to accurately and confidently provide advice and persuade others in an evaluation context
- The participant will develop capacity to understand a situation and to defend a position taking into account the PSC assessment standards.
